There are a number of key issues in addressing sustainability. We started by considering how to reduce operational costs, then looked at maximizing energy, building operation and water efficiencies. 

We oriented the building to reduce energy use and improve access to daylight. Because it was a rural site, we had a fair amount of flexibility in the placement of the building. We were able to place the library and gymnasium on the north side where light was welcome yet reduce glare.  The classroom wings were placed primarily on the south side to take advantage of the effects of more natural light for the students.

Increasing the performance of the school systems as a whole to benefit students and teachers was at the core of the design.  Things like improving indoor air quality (HOW DID YOU DO THIS??)  is a critical issue along with bringing natural daylight into the building with increased glazing while still controlling glare.  Acoustical design of the classroom and library spaces were particularly important; If you can’t hear the teacher it is very difficult to learn.   HOW DID YOU DO THIS??

There was also a focus on reducing environmental impact where possible by using low embodied energy materials and recycled and local materials where possible. Sustainable site design utilized plantings to provide better microclimates and native or adaptive materials that don’t require aeration.
